SOUTH CAROLINA 1950 CENSUS
She is 51 SC and separated getting divorced. Jerome
Hillman Putman. Mamie Lee Burnette was married to Jerome Hillman Putman here in
1930 and 1940. He is a son of Leander Putman and Sarah E. Long from Laurens
County. Two of the sons, Earl W. 19 SC and Maxey D. 15 SC are still with her.
Mamie works in a cotton mill. She is a daughter of William D. Burnette and Ludia Sprouse She was born July 31, 1898 and will die here
in Calhoun Falls November 9, 1970.
JOHN
W. (WILLIAM) PUTNAM Clearwater, Aiken
County
He is 43 NC and his wife Mildred Lee Goodman is 40
NC and they have Billie 17 SC. He works in Clearwater Bleaching Company. He is
a son of Augustus Lee Putnam and his widowed dad 73 SC lives with him. His dad
was born March 16, 1877 and will die February 22, 1963. His mom Cleo Black was
born July 27, 1887 and died January 14, 1923. She was a daughter of John Black
and Katie Heafner. John William Putnam was born in
Cherryville, Gaston County North Carolina October 24. 1907 and will die there
April 14, 1974. Mildred was born in Gaston County August 27,1910 and will die
March 11, 1990. The son Billie Hugh Putnam was born June 27, 1932 and will die
November 16, 2001. Billie married Wanda Sallie Matthews. They all are buried in
Mt. Zion Cemetery in Cherryville.

They were here in Williamstown in 1940.
JAMES
R. PUTNAM Anderson, Anderson County
He is 43 SC, his wife Margaret Elizabeth 37 SC and
they have Ted 15 SC, Annie Laura 6 SC and Maxine E. born in September 1949. He
just pops up Riverside Mills, in 1940 and he and Lizzie are around in Anderson
in 1950. A city directory has James and Elizabeth in Greenville in 1935, James
will die here in 1985. No clues as to who his folks were yet.

He is 28 SC with a family. He is a Nego/Black and
was here with his mother Mary in 1940 and earlier.
FLOYD
PUTMAN Belton, Anderson County
He is 7 SC and a nephew of Charlie Breazuale. His sister Anne Ruth 8 SC is here too. They are
Negros/Blacks.
CLARK A. (ALBERT) PUTNAM Goose Creek, Berkeley County
He is 29 PA and his wife Eula Lee Dangerfield is 30 SC and they have Mark A. 4 SC and Gregory Robert 2 SC. He is a son of Clark Albert Putnam and Mamie Hudson. Clark senior is a son of Joel A. and Amanda Putman and a grandson of Francis Allen Putman of Spaulding County Georgia. Clark was home with his folks in Dooley County GA in 1900 and with them in Turner County GA in 1910. Then in Allegheny County Pennsylvania in 1920. Clark junior and Eula were married in Charleston, South Carolina October 11, 1943. Clark was born in Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania July 26, 1920 and died in Charleston, South Carolina December 4, 1993 in Polk County Florida. Eula was born November 28, 1919 here in Berleley, and will die in Charleston December 3, 1995. She is a daughter of Lawton Dangerfield and Pearl Simms from here.
ALLEN
D. (DERRICK) PUTNAM Charleston,
Charleston County
He is 20 SC and lodging, possible at a school as he
will become a doctor. He is a son of Grover Lee
Putnam and Annie Connelly from Greenwood, Greenwood County. He was born
in Greenwood County August 12, 1930 and will die there April 18, 2004. He
married Mary Wardlaw August 16, 1952. She will die in Shelby County, North
Carolina March 7, 2006. They will have an Allen Derrick Jr. July 2, 1951.
CLARK
A. (ALBERT) PUTNAM Charleston,
Charleston County
He is 59 GA and his wife Eva Davis is 41 GA and are
lodging. He is now working in a Navy Ship Yard. They were in Bibb County
Georgia in 1940. Clark is a son of Joel Albert Putnam and Amanda Seymour. He
was born in Spaulding County Georgia November 3, 1890. He was with his family
in Dooly County Georgia in 1900 and in Turner County Georgia in 1910. Then his
folks divorced. His mother was in Macon, Bibb County in 1920 and 1930. He
married Margaret ‘Mammie’ Hudson July 7, 1917 and they were in Wilkinsburg,
Allegheny County Pennsylvania in 1920. She died back in Byron, Georgia August
25, 1926. I don’t find him in 1930, but he was in Lawrence County Georgia in
1935 and Bibb County Georgia in 1940. His second wife Eva Davis was born in
Georgia July 1, 1909 and will die July 21, 1996 here in Bibb County.
VERLIE
PUTNAM Charleston, Charleston County
She is 45 SC and divorced. She has her son Wallace
Gordon Putnam 18 FL and lives with her aunt Vera Padgett 43. She says she was
in Jacksonville, Florida in 1935 but wasn’t in that 1935 census. Wallace’s
wedding certificate states his dad was George Arthur Putnam. George Arthur
Putnam was a son of George Bannister Putnam and Mary Holland from New York
State and was born in El Paso Texas in June 1890 and he did go to Florida. If
that’s the case his mom was Alice Gertrude Putnam. Makes it more confusing.
Wallace was born September 27, 1931 in Duval, Florida, and will die May 21, 2021
in Middletown, Delaware. He will marry Clara Adella Farrow June 14, 1958 in
Dover, Delaware.

(THOMAS) NEWTON PUTNAM St. Michael &
Phillip, Charleston County
He is 49 AL and his wife Tracy DeRossett 49 TN. He is a vice president at a furniture store and was working there in 1940. He is a son of Isaac Thomas Putnam and Mary Susan Wheeler and was born October 15 1900 in Borden Springs, Cleburne County Alabama. Tracy is a daughter of Zacharia DeRossett and Martha Lavada Dorton and was born April 28, 1900 in Crossville, Cumberland County Tennessee. They were first seen married in the 1930 census in Atlanta, Georgia. He was with his folks in 1910 in Bordon Springs, Cleburne County Alabama and again in 1920. They were in Charleston, South Carolina in 1940. Newer had any kids. Tom will die in Nashville, Tennessee September 8, 1968 and Tracy will wander over to Chattanooga, Tennessee and call it quits April 18, 1982. They are both buried in Atlanta, Georgia.
ARTHUR
G. (GLENN) PUTNAM Cherokee, Cherokee
County
He is 68 NC NC NC and owns a farm. Ruby Evans, wife number 4, is listed as
being a mere 23 NC. His son Leonard is 26 SC and they have a new one, Ray T.,
born in February. I think Art is a widower and lil
ole Ruby is Len’s wife. Makes a lot more sense, and handwriting was still a big problem. He is a son of Anzie McFee Putman and Harriet McIntyre from Cleveland
County North Carolina. He was born there April 9, 1882 and will die back in
Shelby, North Carolina June 23, 1955. He was married to Bertha Ray McSwain here
in 1940. She died in 1946 and he married Ruby Evans in 1949. Bertha was wife
number 3. He was briefly married to Rebecca Jane Willman from 1909-1911. She
died and he married Minnie Florence Grigg who died in March 1920 back in North
Carolina. He married Bertha two months later in July 1920. He took off on the
kids from his second marriage. They are back in Cleveland County North Carolina
with their grandparents the Griggs.
HARLAND
D. (DURANT) PUTNAM Cherokee, Cherokee
County
He is 42 NC, his wife Ruth Towne McAbee 41 SC and
they have Winifred Jean 15 SC. They both work in a cotton mill. He was single
here in 1930 and married in 1940 and now. He was next door in York County in
1920 with his re-married mother Hattie and said he was NC NC
NC then. Hattie Idella Rippy
married John S. Putnam in Cleveland County North Carolina December 18, 1904 and
he died there October 18, 1908. John was a son of Joseph Devaney Putnam and
Roxanna Jane Weathers and was born in Shelby, Cleveland County North Carolina
November 21, 1907 and will die in Simpsonville, Greenville County South
Carolina November 13, 1971. His wife Ruth Towne McAbee was born in Cleveland
County May 23, 1908 and will die there September 28, 1987.
HOBERT
PUTMAN Cherokee, Cherokee County
He is 52 NC NC NC and a station hand in a cotton mill. His wife Nellie
Dorman is 46 SC and they have Charles B. 18 SC, George 12 SC, Martha 8 SC,
Carolyn 7 SC and Kenneth 5 SC. The 4 older kids are all off and running. He is
William Hobert Putnam, son of Edward Putman of North Carolina. His folks were
Edward Putman and Robena Brock. He was born January 16, 1897, and will die in
Blacksburg, Cherokee County April 30, 1977. Nellie is a daughter of Mason
Edward and Mattie Dorman. She was born March 10, 1904 and will die in
Blacksburg April 22, 1984.
SALLIE
PUTNAM Cherokee, Cherokee County
She is 76 SC and widowed. She is living with
Marshall Batchelor as his aunt. Sarah M. Bates is the widow of Marcus Alexander
Putman from North Carolina. They were in York County SC in 1910 and in
Lancaster County SC in 1920. She was widowed in Spartanburg County in 1930
living with her married daughter Jennie Carr and her
husband Timothy Carr. In 1940 she was here living
with her sister Mary Neal.
SUDIE
PUTNAM Cherokee, Cherokee County
She is 54 SC and widowed. Sudie
Boyd Foster was married to Thomas Lee Putnam here from December 11, 1911 when
they were married to November 13, 1947 when he died. He was a son of Franklin
A. Putnam and Eliza Allen from Cleveland County, North Carolina. She has her
daughter Janelle 20 SC with her. She was born December 23, 1895 and will die in
Shelby, North Carolina on April 10, 1990 at age 94.
WILLIAM
PUTNAM Cherokee, Cherokee County
He is 33 SC and a weaver in a textile plant. His
wife Mary Sue Barrett is 25 NC and they have Harold D. 4 SC and Sheila born in
October. William Franklin Putnam is a son of Thomas Lee Putnam and Sudie Byrd Foster from here. He was born here February 23,
1917 and will die July 2, 1993 back up in Shelby Cleveland County, North
Carolina. Mary Sue is a daughter of Charlie Glenn and Flossie D. Barrett. She
was born in Earl, Cleveland County North Carolina and will die in Grover,
Cleveland County North Carolina November 5, 2015.
DOROTHY
H. PUTNAM Gaffney, Cherokee County
She is 19 SC and living with her folks David and
Ruth Hollyfield and she has a daughter Reda born in
February. No clue to her husband except his name is William Putnam. In the 1940
here. George William Putnam, listed below, had a son Billie age 16 SC then. Bet
a dime that’s him. He’s not here or with his folks

W. (WILLIAM) PUTNAM Gaffney, Cherokee
County
He is 61 NC NC NC and works in a cotton mill as does his wife and all
their sons. His wife Frances Victoria Ramsey is 60 SC and they have their
‘separated’ daughter Marjorie Kennedy 28 SC and her son Christopher S. Kennedy
7 SC. She married Christopher Stephen Kennedy in 1942 and will keep the name
Kennedy till she dies September 5, 2010. She was born December 3, 1921. George
is a son of William Alexander Putnam and Zulia Ellen Bridges from Cleveland
County North Carolina. George was born there May 4, 1888, and will die here
December 12, 1960. He married Vickie November 4, 1906. Margie was born in South
Carolina May 5, 1889 and will die in Gaffney November 20, 1977.
JOHN
H. (HOWARD) PUTNAM Gaffney, Cherokee
County
He is a cotton cloth weaver. He is 33 SC and
married to Annie Lee Motts 29 SC. They live with her folks John Motts and
Gladys Whelchel. John Putnam is a son of George
William Putnam and Frances Victoria Ramsey from here. He was born here October
24, 1916 and died right here March 10, 2006. Annie was born here January 22,
1924 and will die here July 13, 1986.
RALPH
PUTNAM Gaffney, Cherokee County
He is 36 SC and his wife Lavinia Lucille Greene is
31 SC and they have Barbara Ann 10 SC and Michael Larry 4 SC. Ralph is a loom
fixer and Lucille a battery fixer in a cotton mill as they both were in 1940.
He is a son of George William Putnam and Frances Victoria Ramsey from here. and
works in the same mill they do. He was born January 27, 1913, and will die
Christmas Day December 25, 1970. Lucille was born July 8, 1917 and will die
here February 25, 1987.

He is 42 SC NC NC and a
loom fixer at the cotton mill. His wife Lois Best is 40 SC and they now have
Charlie 23 SC, Harold Dean 22 SC, J. Thomas 19 SC, Patsy 17 SC, Corrine 16 SC,
Carol Sue 14 SC, Joan 12 SC, Parnell Jr. 9 SC and Frankie 2 SC. They have been
married 23 years and were here in 1930 and 1940 and will be all their lives. He
is a son of George William Putnam and Frances Victoria Ramsey. His dad was a
son of William Alexander Putnam and Zulia Ellen Bridges from Cleveland County
North Carolina. He was born here July 27, 1907 and die in Gaffney in January
1964. He married Louise Best here in 1926. She is a daughter of William Martin
Best and Cora Thomason and was born in Spartanburg County August 29, 1909 and
will die here in Gaffney January 7, 1984. His folks are here and have been
since the later 1890s.
DONALD D. (DAVID) PUTNAM College Heights, Darlington County
He is 31 VT and his wife Mary Etta Langston is 22
SC and they have Donald D. Jr. 5 SC and Richard C. 3 SC. Donald is a son of Charles Henry Putnam and Ida
Bell Terrill and was born in Addison County Vermont May 8, 1918. He was there
in 1920 and then with the family in Hague, Warren County in 1930 and 1935. His
dad had died and his mom Ida Belle was there in town married to Rolland
Granger. He was single in Ticonderoga, New York in 1940. He enlisted in the
Army June 2, 1942. He came to South Carolina after the War and married Mary
Langston here, and he will die in Hartsville, Darlington County April 25, 2007.
Mary is a daughter of Clyde Hester Langston and Nellie Ham Langston and was
born in Hartsville January 26, 1962 and will die there June 19, 2010.
ROY W. (WILLIS) PUTNAM Darlington, Darlington County
He is 30 SC and his wife Dora Elizabeth Stokes is
also 30 SC and they have Harvey Willis 3 SC. They are living with her widowed
mother Minnie Stokes 64 SC. He is a son of James Butler Putnam and Elizabeth
Ruth McCall. He was born in Florence, Florence County October 24, 1919 and will
die here in Darlington Mar 9, 1970 probably from getting too excited at the
NASCAR race track here in town. Elizabeth was a daughter of Harvey Witherspoon
and Minnie Gray Stokes, and was born in Darlington on December 11, 1919 and
will die October 16, 2000 in Florence, South Carolina. She and Roy were married
here in Darlington October 20, 1945. After he dies, she will marry Louis Brown
and then Robert Register.

Sara Gunthorp.
GEORGE
E. (EDWARD) PUTNAM Florence, Florence
County
George Junior is a farmer and now 43 SC, his wife
Inez Clara Jones is 45 SC and they have James E. 19 SC, Ina Joyce 15 SC and
Harris Wayne 11 SC. He is a son of George Edward Putnam and Ella Harris from
here. He was born in Abbeville County April 18, 1906 and will die May 13, 1953.
He was in Marion County in 1930 and back here by 1935. Inez is a daughter of
Duncan Marvin Jones and Mary Elizabeth ‘Mamie’ Sawyer, and was born in Marion
County March 11, 1905 and will die here in Florence November 15, 1987. She will
marry a Smith guy after George dies.
GEORGE
M. (MUNN) PUTNAM Florence, Florence
County
He is 46 SC, his wife Emma Lee Eagerton 45 and they
have George Randall 10 SC. His widowed
father James Putnam 72 SC is with them. Her widowed mother Amelia Margarite
Eagerton 68 SC is also with them. He is a baker at a wholesale bakery. He is a
son of James Butler Putnam an Elizabeth McCall here in town. George was born
April 23, 1904 and will die in Anderson, South Carolina February 24, 1985. Emma
Lee was born November 23, 1903 and will die December 3, 1988. They were married
here Christmas Day December 25, 1935.

County
He is 33 SC and still single. He works for a radio
station. Jim is a son of James Butler Putnam and Elizabeth Ruth McCall from
here. He was born January 3, 1917 in Belton Green, South Carolina and will die
June 25, 1979 in New Bern, Craven County North Carolina. He married Florence
Edna Watson Hall in Craven County February 27, 1956.
TRAVIS
E. (EDWARD) PUTNAM Florence, Florence
County
He is 20 SC and his wife Katherine Ann Ingram is 19
SC. He is George Travis Edward Putnam, son of the George Edward Junior listed
above. He was born in Mullins, Marion County June 18, 1928 and will die here in
Florence County June 9, 2011. Katherine is a daughter of Ivy Isaac Ingram and Dezzie Belle Courtney and was born May 7, 1930 here in
Florence and will die here June 17, 2017.
JOHN
CALVIN PUTNAM Austin, Greenville County
He is 67 SC SC SC and wife Ruth Janette Thomason 50 SC and they have Betty
Sue 17 SC. He is a plumber now. He was first married to Eva Maude Thomason up
through the 1920 census. She died February 21, 1927. He was married in Jacks
Township to her sister Janette in 1930. He is a son of John Abner Putman and
Elizabeth Jane Cheek from Dials, Laurens County. His mom died there in 1930 and
his dad in 1935. John and Janette were in Dials in 1940. John Calvin was born September
5, 1881 and will die here August 3, 1962. Janette was born September 12, 1899
and will die December 3, 1983. The daughter Betty Sue was born October 28, 1932
in Clinton, Laurens County and will marry a Moore guy and die November 30, 2021
in Laurens, Laurens County.

This is a Negro/Black family. He is 25 SC and his
wife Lola 23 SC with 2 kids.
WILLIS
B. (BYRON) PUTMAN Chick Springs,
Greenville County
He is 41 SC, his wife Kate Burnette 39 SC and they
have Constance 11 SC and Byron Kendall 7 SC. Willis Byron is a son of Willis
Robert Putman and Larissa Ann Woods and was born in Laurens County October 12,
1908, and was at home through 1935. He married Katherine Clarice Burnette in
Greer, Grenville County November 13, 1937. He is an auto mechanic at a garage.
He will die in Greer September 16, 1981. Kate is a daughter of Archie Perrin
Burnette and Clarice Ann Smith and was born in Reidville, South Carolina
February 14, 1910 and will die in Greer March 18, 1993.
CARL
PUTNAM Fairview, Greenville County
He is 47 SC and his wife Nellie Young is 37 SC and
also here is his widowed mother Lola 81 SC. John Carl Putman is a son of John
Walter Harrison Putman and Eulula Margaret Farrow
from Greenville. He was born there October 16, 1902 and will die there November
3, 1970. Nellie was born January 30, 1909 and will die July 17, 1988. Both are
buried in Cannon Memorial Park in Fountain Inn, Greenville County. His dad John
was born September 9, 1871 and he died March 9, 1944. He was a son of Cornelius
and Margarette Elizabeth Putman. Lola, his wife, was born March 4, 1869 in
Greenville, and will die here February 22, 1958.
GEORGE
L. (LEONARD) PUTNAM Fairview, Greenville
County
He is 47 SC SC SC and rents farmland. His wife Fannie Mae Abercrombie is
47 and they have Carl Lewis 17 SC and Lucie Jane 12 SC. He is a son of Lawrence
Austin Putman and Maggie Thomason and was born here September 22, 1902 and will
die here September 8, 1984. Fannie was born December 9, 1902 and will die
January 12, 1993. They were married here November 6, 1922.
INEZ
G. (GRIFFEN) PUTMAN Fairview, Greenville
County
She is 54 SC and now widowed. Inez Griffin was married
to Thomas Lee Putman here in Fairview and he died here last year. He was a son
of John Walter Harrison Putman and Lula Margaret Farrow of Greenville County.
He was born December 5, 1892 and died here in Greenville February 23, 1949.
Inez was born August 27, 1890 and will die May 25, 1987.
JOHN W. (WALTER) PUTMAN
Fairview, Greenville County
He is 31 SC SC SC and works in a textile mill like 99% of the people in
South Carolina. Well, maybe not quite that many, but a lot do. His wife
Virginia Ruth McKinney is 27 SC and they have Robert W. 10 SC. He is a son of
Thomas Putman and Inez Griffin from here. He was born August 24, 1918 and will
die right here August 12, 1999. Virginia was born May 12, 1923 and she will die
here December 9, 2011.
CARROL
B. PUTMAN Fountain Inn, Greenville
County
He is 41 SC SC SC and his wife Nona Welborn is 37 SC. They lived with her
folks Frank and Maisy Welborn here in 1930. He was born September 15, 1908 and
will die here July 29, 1969. He is a son of Orlando C. Putman from Davidson
County North Carolina where he was 1 year old and born SC in 1910. Orlando died
and Carroll isn’t found in 1920. Carroll and Nona are found here in 1930. Then
they are off the books in 1940, but appear now in 1950. Carrol is buried in
Cannon Memorial Park here in town. Nona was born April 11, 1913 and will die
here in Fountain Inn April 14, 2006. She is a daughter of Frank W. and Maisy
Welborn.
LAWRENCE
A. (ARTHUR) PUTMAN Fairview, Greenville
County
He is 76 SC SC SC and owns a farm but is unable to work on it. One of his
kids, John and his family live here and works the farm too. His wife Maggie S.
Thomason is 71 SC. His son John Gideon is 37 SC and his wife Lucile Mary Babb
is 36 SC and they have Clarabell 18 SC, Barbara Grace 18 SC, Johnnie E . , a
daughter, 13 SC, James G. 10 SC and Betty Fay 7 SC. He is a son of John Abner
Putnam and Elizabeth Cheek from Laurens County. He was born December 15, 1873.
He married Maggie S. Thomason about 1896. She was born October 18, 1877 and
will die here December 10, 1963. He will die here August 22, 1959.
MCDUFFIE

Greenville County
He is 32 SC and his wife Mary Jo Thomas is 30 SC.
He is a son of McDuffie Putnam and Lillian Sprouse from Woodruff, Spartanburg
County where he was born March 19, 1918. He will die back in Spartanburg
February 15, 2015. He in an elementary school principal, and Mary Jo is a
teacher there. They were married June 12, 1943 in Pickens County South Carlina.
Mary Jo was born in Pickens County August 21, 1919 and will die March 25, 2020
in Roebuck, South Carolina. She is a daughter of Claude Columbus Thomas and
Malinda Isabella Chastain from Pickens.
WILLIE
A. (ANDERSON) PUTMAN Fairview,
Greenville County
He is 40 SC and his wife Hester Simms is 30 SC. He
married Hester Simms November 24, 1927. They were here in 1930 and 1940. They
have Joyce 11 SC and now Linda 4 SC. He is a son of Lawrence and Maggie Putman
listed above. He worked on their farm in 1940, but has moved and works for a
manufacturing company. He was born October 25, 1908 and died April 19, 1989. He
married Hester Simms November 24, 1927. She is a daughter of Robert and Sallie
Simms from Dunklin, Greenville County.
She was born May 21, 1908 and will die January 26, 1997.
J. O. (JAMES ODELL) PUTMAN Gantt, Greenville County
He is 39 SC, his wife Mary Welborn is 36 SC, and
they have James M. (Michael) 14 SC, Carolyn 11 SC, Jerry 8 SC and Susan 3 SC.
He is a Constable here now. He is a son of William Jesse Putman and Belle
Foster from Laurens County and then in Greenville. He and Mary were in Greenville in 1940. He
was born June 11, 1910 and will die in Greenville in March 1918. Mary was born
May 6, 1913 and will die January 19, 1993.
ANNA
PUTMAN Greenville, Greenville County
She is 66 SC and widowed. Her daughter Marie
Frances 37 SC is still with her. They were in Dials Township Laurens County 1n
1940. Frances Louanna ‘Anna’ Woods had been married
to Willis Robert Putman there since 1903. He was a son of Zadock
Putman and Clarinda Woods and was born here October 29, 1879. He died there
June 18, 1937. Anna was born there February 22, 1884 and will die here in
Greenville September 28, 1958. She is a daughter of Robert and Emma Woods from
Dial. The daughter Frances Marie was born there April 20, 1912 and will die
here May 1, 1986. She never married. They are also listed now in Dials, Lauren
County.
ARNOLD

here in July 1985. Raymond was born in 1920 and will marry Ruth Allen in 1954.
He will die out in Granada Hills, California January 6, 2000. David was born
November 21, 1929 and died March 15, 1992.

September 29, 1866. He married Margaret Bryson in 1884 and she died in 1888. He
then married Harriet Anna Randall in 1891. Anna was born October 17, 1870. She
was a daughter of Benjamin Pope Randall and Henrietta Rebecca Snow. In 1900 and
1910 they are in Greenville County South Carolina and in 1920 in Abbeville
County. James will die in Greenville January 10, 1952. The daughter May was
born November 20, 1894 and never married. She will die here January 17, 1979.
Clyde was married to then divorced from Nellie Stone. He was born September 10,
1976 and will die out in Pelzer, Arizona in October 1976.

mom died in 1938 and their dad was widowed in Greenville. Billie was born here
January 16, 1933 and abandoned. She will marry Claiborne Merle Kelly in 1962,

1, 1904 and will die November 13, 1985. He was in Fairview, Greenville County
up until 1935 when they were here.

He is 39 SC and his wife Dorothy Alma Pendergrass
is 31 SC. I can’t find anything on him nor can Ancestry. But Dorothy’s
Find-a-Grave gives his full name and her folks Edward Connor and Lorena Pendergrass
and gives her birth as January 1, 1919 and death December 20, 2007 in
Darlington, South Carolina. We find Dickie was a son of George Edward Putnam
and Frances Ella Harris and was born in Abbeville during the fireworks on July
4, 1910 and he will die March 28, 1985 in Florence, South Carolina. They were
married in Florence June 29, 1946. Yep, lil ole
Richie age 19 was with his folks in Tans Bay Florence County in 1930. Can’t
find him in 1940. Not in the Service till October 29, 1942 when he joined the Army,
but was in the woods brewing moonshine, I guess.

Montjoy was married to Stephen Perry Putnam in 1880 and they were here in
Laurens County till he died July 9, 1914. Mattie was born March 22, 1862 and
will die October 12, 1953. They were in Laurens County through the 1910. Then
after he died Mattie and the kids were in Greenville County. By 1930 through
1935 at least, she is with her sons in Cleveland County North Carolina. She and
the Gwinns were here in Youngs in 1940. They are both buried in the
Patterson Chapel Methodist Church Cemetery in Enoree,
Laurens County. Nora was born March 15, 1887 and will die in 1966.

married to Homer Dixon Putman here since 1910. He was a son of Jeremiah Young

May 17, 2020. Miriam is a daughter of William Anderson and Mary Rebecca
Westmoreland and was born in Woodruff, South Carolina February 4, 1925 and will

birthday is April 10th, but a bit later than hers. This entry and
the next 3 list their home in Newry, but all said Seneca in 1930 and 1940. Same
house. Newry must be a section of Seneca or vice versa.

William Ebenezer Putman Jr. and Mary Ann Compton. Not sure about the middle
name it appears as Ebenezer and the Elbert a lot. He was born in Georgia, but
has been here since 1900. Lola was born February 18, 1894 and will die here
August 19, 1983. She is a daughter of George and Mary Eugenia Price. The son James
Thomas became a minister and married Runett Rhodes
and they had James Dean, Wayne, Greg and Donna. James died in Walhalla, South
Carolina April 18, 2006 at age 80.

from North Carolina. Found a great family sheet on Ancestry while trying to
figure him in the 1950 Census. He was a son of Linsey Grady Putnam and Clarinda
Elizabeth ‘Bessie’ Jones, and was born in Spartanburg, South Carolina April 22,
1901. His mom died in Spartanburg July 18, 1904 and his dad died there April
27, 1909. That’s why the Jacksons took him in off the street. His dad Linsey
was a son of Leonard Putnam and Margaret Swain from Rutherford County North Carolina
to Spartanburg County South Carolina where Linsey was born and where his folks
died. His mom in 1899 and his dad in 1902. Glenn married Ellen up in Guilford
County North Carolina November 4, 1925. She is a daughter of Oliver Perry
Shelton and Addie Florist Rippey from Alamance County
North Carolina where she was born January 31, 1906 and she will die in
Columbia, Richland County South Carolina in April 1984. Glenn will die there
May 15, 1963. Their son Glenn Junior was born January 27, 1927 in Guilford
County North Carolina and will marry Linda Lewis in Gaston County North
Carolina June 16, 1961 and they will head off to Texas where she will die
February 10, 1996 and he May 14, 2002. That ‘mysterious’ family out of Guilford

U. S. Social Security Death Index has her as Carrie Belle Gaines. I guess only
briefly married to a Putman as I don’t find her as a Putman or Putnam in 1930
or 1940 here in South Carolina where she was born.
GORDON
PUTMAN Beech Springs, Spartanburg County
He is 44 SC NC NC, and of
course works in a cotton mill. His wife Elizabeth Myrtle Pittman is 42 SC and they
have Gordon 13 SC and Forrest 12 SC. They were married here September 3, 1925.
Alexander Gordon Putman is a son of William Alexander Putman and his second
wife Evie S. Hughes. He was with his widowed mom here in 1920 and here with
Elizabeth and the kids in 1930. William was a son of Samuel Evans Putman and
Artie Hardin from Cleveland County and then Rutherford County, North Carolina.
Gordon was born September 7, 1905 and died in Greenville September 5, 1957.
Myrtle was born January 20, 1907 and will die here in Spartanburg County March
10, 1996.

He is 27 SC and his wife Allie Annette Henderson is
27 SC and they have Mitchell 2 SC. Edward ‘Josh’ Putman is a son of William
Hobert Putman and Nellie Mason Dorman. He was born in Cherokee County March 9,
1923 and was with the family I Spartanburg in 1930 and 1940. He will die here
in Cowpens September 22, 2009. Allie is a daughter of William Anderson
Henderson and Dorothy Mitchell ‘Cub’ Cash. She was born October 28, 1922 and
will call it quits August 10, 2016 here in Cowpens.

He is 44 SC and his wife Alice Elizabeth Smith is
27 GA. They have Gladys A. 5 SC, Charles Robert 3 SC and Velma 2 SC. He works
in a retail furniture store. He was born June 6, 1904 and will die February 10,
1972. Alice is a daughter of Alfred and Ruby Smith, and was born May 18, 1922
and will die May 1, 1970. He is a son of Elias Napoleon Putnam and Pearl Ethel
Lindsey. Elias was a son of Martin Toliver Putman from Rutherford County North
Carolina. They have been here in Spartanburg since the early 1900s. Charles was
with his folks in Spartanburg in 1910 and 1920. In 1930 he lived here with his
folks and was married to Ethel Lowrey. I don’t find him in 1940, handwriting
probably, but he was married here in 1942 when he signed up for the draft. He
referred to his wife simply as Mrs. C. A. Putnam. Now he is right here with a
new wife. Ancestry found a newspaper clipping that said he married Ethel in
1929. Probably here in 1940 but spelled poorly.
BRODUS

He is 50 SC SC SC and is now widowed. He is a son of Samuel Putman and
Jane Holcombe from Rutherford County North Carolina. He was married to Stella
Mems who died here September 9, 1948. They were in Laurens County in 1920 and
here ever since. He was born March 8, 1889 and will die here in Spartanburg
January 15, 1960.

He is 51 SC and works at a cotton textile mill. His
wife Laura Elizabeth Hanvey is 54 SC and they have Derrell Darby 26 SC and
Wilma Jean 18 SC. He is a son of Thomas Fowler Putman and Martha Jane Harden
from Oconee County, South Carolina. He was there in 1920 and married to Laura
in Spartanburg in 1930 and they were in Greenville in 1935 and 1940. He was
born Oconee County October 13, 1899 and will die in Seneca, Oconee County May
3, 1979. Laura was born there May 30, 1895 and will die Seneca March 8, 1961.
She is a daughter of John Joshua Hanvey and Lillie Cordella Mason from here.

She is 37 GA and separated. She has her son Boyd
Terry Putnam 7 SC with her. Ethel Lowery was married to Charlie Putnam here in
1930 when she was 18 years old. Can’t find in 1940, but must have been around
here. Charlie was or is a son of Elias Napoleon Putnam and Pearl Ethel Lindsey
from here in Spartanburg. Ethel was born in 1912 and will die up in Ashville,
North Carolina November 10, 2001. She is a daughter of Ervin Lowery and
Hortense Anderson.

He is 35 and his wife Willie Mae Gilreath is 29 SC.
They have Hassie G. a daughter 9 SC, Linda H. 2 SC and Patsy E. 1 SC. Reason
for the gap in kids was that he was in the service in WWII in the first half of
the 1940s. Also here is Willie Mae’s sister Ruby F. Gilreath 16 SC. Everett Byrd
Putnam is a son of Flavious ‘Frank’ Putnam and
Elizabeth Leila Florence Bailey. He was born March 16, 1915 and will die in
Spartanburg in August 1960.

He is 66 SC SC SC and has retired from his grocery store. His wife Addie
Jane Montjoy is 62 SC. He is Martin Toliver's son from Rutherford County North
Carolina. They have been here since 1920. George was born March 23, 1884 and
will die here October 20, 1961. Addie was born November 30, 1887 and will die
here April 27, 1973. She is a daughter of John Franklin Montjoy and Nancy
Freeman.

him is in1930 in Spartanburg at age 15 and a nephew of Robert and Hattie Painter.
No clue as to daddy. Ancestry didn’t even find this one and no ideas where he
was in 1920 and 1940. He was born October 21, 1912 and will die here in
Spartanburg November 8, 1998.

Thomas Martin Putman and Mamie Powell and was born here May 29, 1915 and will
die here January 31, 1963. Mildred is a daughter of Claude Wolfe and Elizabeth
Camp. She was born in South Carolina March 18, 1917 and will die in Spartanburg
June 19, 1906.

He is a son of Elias Herman Putman and Zena Sawyer from here. He was born here

daughter of George and Agnes Lytle from Spartanburg. Mattie was born October
10, 1927 and will die here May 19, 2013.

was born June 18, 1892. Mamie is a daughter of David and Ida Powell and was
born in Duncan South Carolina December 21, 1896 and will die in Spartanburg
February 22, 1971. Tom will die here February 7, 1960. They both work in a
cotton mill. He is a second hand and she is a spooler.
ZENA

She is 44 NC and now widowed. She has her son
Broadus Eugene Putman 27 SC with her. Zena Alma Sawyer was married to Elijah
Herman Putman here in 1930 and 1940. He died December 15, 1940. Zena still works
in a cotton textile mill. Zena was born October 5, 1905 and will call it
quits here on April 8, 1995.

He is 23 SC and freshly married to Joyce Pittman 23
SC. He is Gordon Jr. His folks are here in Beech Springs, Spartanburg County.
He was born June 22, 1926 in Wellford, and will die here June 24, 1960. Too bad
he missed his 34th birthday by 2 days. He married Joyce November 28, 1948. She
is a daughter of Houston and Eula Pittman from Greenville County was born April
4, 1928 and will die in Rockledge, Brevard County Florida on September 16,
2016. They will have a son Gregory Scott Putnam in Wellford June 12, 1958. She
will marry a Caldwell fella later and that’s her last name when she dies.

Putnam is a son of William Larry Putnam and Minnie Simmons from Laurens County
and then here in Spartanburg. He was born August 29, 1909 in Laurens County. He
married Adgelee Godfrey there October 1, 1936. He
will die September 11, 1964. Adgelee was born
September 7, 1910 in Laurens County and will die there August 25, 1989. The
daughter Adelia was born November 4, 1937 and will marry Roy Earl Leake. She will die April 7, 2015. Larry was born December
20, 1947 and was still up and at ‘em in 2023 when I
was doing this 1950 census. I was born in 1937 and plan on another 25 years of
hanging around.

He is 61 SC SC SC and still a police officer for the city. His wife
Lillian Epton Sprouse is 55 SC and they have Dorothy
Dix 24 SC and William Frank 20 SC still at home. He is a son of William Dogan
Putman and Sarah Knight. His widowed mom was with them here in 1920, but has
died June 21, 1930. McDuffie was born August 10, 1888 and will die here in
Woodruff May 15, 1977. Lillian was born
June 25, 1894 and will die in May 1984.

is a weaver in a cotton mill and is 44 SC. His wife Ruth Lawrence is 38 SC and
does weaving at the cotton mill. They have a son William Ralph Jr. 19 SC.
William Ralph is a son of Lawrence William Putnam and Minnie Lee Simmons from here. He was born
June 1, 1904. He married Ruth Lawrence on February 19, 1927. He will die here
in Woodruff on December 29, 1975. Ruth will die here January 18, 2005.
WILLIAM
L. (LAWRENCE ‘LARRY’) PUTNAM Woodruff,
Spartanburg County
He is 58 SC SC SC and like most folks works in a cotton mill. His wife
Minnie Lee Simmons has recently died on September 4, 1949. Their separated daughter Vera Kate Peace 34
SC and her kids are here as they were in 1940. She has Kenneth Lee 17 SC, Jimmie
Irene 12 SC, and Peggy Diane 11 SC. He is Lawrence William Putnam a son of
Stephen Perry Putman and Martha Susan Lovejoy from Laurens County where they
had been up until 1930. He’ll be here till he dies May 16, 1960. Vera was born
August 29, 1915 and will die here February 26, 1992. She has married James
Robert Peace and will marry Alvin Godfrey and be married to him the rest of her
life.
BILLIE
J. (JAMES) PUTNAM Woodruff, Spartanburg
County
He is a son of the above William Larry Putnam. Billie
is 30 SC and married to Juanita Oleen Rhodes 25 SC
and they have Teresa Louise 1 SC. Billie was born in Laurens June 2, 1919 and
then the family came here to Woodruff. He married Juanita March 9, 1947. She
was born December 31, 1924 and will die in Anderson County March 7, 2010.
Billie was a Warrant Officer in WWII.
MARJORIE W. PUTNAM
Kingstree, Williamsburg County
She is 31 SC. Single, a teacher and lodging. Never
appears anywhere in North American as a Putnam in last 20-30 yeas. Bad writing
or she married a Putnam secretly and snuck away a couple nights later.
ROY F. (FINNEY) PUTNAM Ebenezer, York County
He is24 SC and his wife Sara Irene Armstrong is 22
SC and a spinner at a cotton mill. They have a daughter Sara Ruth 1 SC and his
mother Annie Barr Putnam 66 SC living with them. They were married November 10,
1945. Roy was born August 16, 1925 and will die in York, York County June 26,
2005. Roy and his mom were in Clover, York County in 1940. Sarah was with her
folks Warner and Nannie Armstrong in Bethel, York County in 1940. Sarah was
born in York County March 21, 1927 and will die in Rock Hill, York County
August 1, 2015.
JESSIE PUTNAM
Rock Hill, York County
He is 47 NC lodging and says he was never married.
He is a pharmacist in a retail drug store. Can’t find him anywhere in 1940. The
only info Ancestry can find is that he is Jessie E. Putnam a son of Robert and
Willie-Hippy Putnam and that he was in Rock Hill when he died May 9, 1974.
SYLVANUS
V. (VANCE) PUTMAN York Township, York
County
He is 35 NC, his wife Thelma Crawford 30 SC and
they have Jerry E. 12 SC and Phyllis D.10 SC. Both are weavers in a cotton
mill. He and Thelma were in Gaston County North Carolina in 1935 and here in
1940. He is Sylvanus Vance Putnam from Gaston County. Sylvanus is a son of
Thomas Vance Putnam and Etta Lulu Chancy and was born in Gaston County February
25, 1914 and will die February 1972. Thelma was born November 11, 1918 and will
die in February 1987.
